JSW seeks to join hands with OEMs to manufacture EVs: Report
Following the partnership with SAIC-owned MG Motors, the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is seeking collaboration with global automotive manufacturers to widen its presence in the electric vehicle industry, the TOI reported.
According to the report, JSW is in talks with several Orignal Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). One of the OEMs is China-based Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
Earlier, in March, JSW Group and SAIC Motor joined hands under the name of JSW MG Motor India PVT LTD. The partnership is aimed to foster the manufacturing of ICE engines and electric vehicles. Aligning with its goals, the company intends to unveil a diverse fleet of vehicles including electric and hybrid rides to plug-in-hybrids.
With SAIC Motor’s automotive expertise and the JSW Group’s manufacturing capacity, the joint venture is aiming to sell one million EVs in India by 2030. Therefore, the joint venture is seeking to capture around one-third of the domestic EV market. Under the partnership, the MG Cyberster electric sports car will be the first offering which is expected to be launched in 2025 under the luxury brand “MG Select.”
As of now, the JSW Group owns a 35% share in JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture established with SAIC Motor in 2023. With 49% of the market, SAIC still holds the greatest position, followed by MG dealers and employees with 8% and private equity firm Everstone Capital with 49%. Before JSW MG Motor India is possibly listed, there have been rumours that JSW may raise its ownership to 51%. The business hasn't verified these rumours, though. Such a move might give JSW majority control over the joint venture if it materialises.
