Jio join hands with Taiwan’s MediaTek to debut in the 2W EV market
Jio, an Indian conglomerate, has partnered with MediaTek, a massive fabless semiconductor company in Taiwan, to provide digital dashboards to the rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector.
The collaboration, unveiled on Thursday at a New Delhi industry event, would enable Jio-developed hardware, an Android-based operating system, and MediaTek processors to be used in electric scooters in India and maybe other growing countries. These instrument clusters, which show the driver's information, are powered by MediaTek MT8766 and MT8768 system-on-chips and run the Android-based AvniOS operating system.
The partnership may benefit the two companies. By 2030, India, one of the largest two-wheeler marketplaces in the world, wants all two-wheeler sales to be powered by electric vehicles.
By selling 4G subscriptions to vehicle owners and providing value-added services like cloud and mapping solutions, Jio hopes to increase its income through the agreement. The telecom may eventually make money from the information gathered from its 4G modules and clusters.
Since at least last year, TechCrunch has learnt, that Jio Things, a division of Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms that creates Internet of Things devices for the telecom behemoth, has been developing its two-wheeler clusters. For the past few months, the company's Android-based operating system for EVs has been under development by a devoted team in Bengaluru.
