India’s EV War Explodes: Tata’s Grip Slips as MG & Mahindra Steal the Spotlight with Record-Breaking Growth
India’s passenger electric vehicle (EV) market has just hit an all-time high in August 2025, and the numbers are nothing short of electrifying! With 17,298 EVs retailed last month, the industry posted a jaw-dropping 155% year-on-year growth, making it one of the fastest-growing auto segments in the country.
Tata Fights Back as EV Market Share Crashes to 41%
Tata Motors continues to be India’s EV giant, clocking 7,088 units in August, its highest in 8 months. This marks a 61% YoY growth and a 41% market share, powered by the Harrier EV, Nexon EV, and Punch EV.
However, its dominance is under threat, as Tata’s market share has slipped from 65% last year to 41% now. To bounce back, Tata has announced a ₹35,000 crore EV war chest, targeting compact EVs, lifestyle SUVs, midsize cars, and premium electric SUVs to regain a 50% share.
From Underdog to EV Disruptor — MG Grabs 27.5% Market Share
JSW MG Motor India is the dark horse of the EV race. With the Windsor EV (backed by Battery-as-a-Service) and new M9 MPV, MG is fast becoming a premium EV disruptor. It sold 4,759 units in August, a staggering 231% YoY growth, grabbing 27.5% market share.
Although sales dipped 10% compared to July, MG is firmly positioned as Tata’s biggest challenger.
Mahindra & Mahindra: BE 6 & XEV 9e Fuel Growth
Mahindra is roaring ahead with its new BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs. The company retailed 3,495 units in August, marking an explosive 937% YoY growth. With a 20% market share, Mahindra has tripled its EV presence compared to last year’s 5%.
If momentum continues, Mahindra could be Tata’s toughest rival this festive season.

-
Tata is banking on fresh launches and festive schemes.

MG is pushing its premium lineup.

Mahindra is betting big on its rugged BE & XEV series.
But there’s a catch — all eyes are on the upcoming GST Council meeting. If the current 5% EV GST slab changes, pricing could disrupt the current momentum.
