India’s EV sales hit 108% YoY increase in H1 FY2026, Tata tops in market share
Hitting a new milestone in the half-yearly growth of FY2026 (April- September 2025), India’s electric vehicle (EV) market has recorded retail sales of 91,076 units, marking a 108 per cent year-on-year increase from the previous sales of 43,847 units last year, Autocar reported
The segment's achievement of over 84% of the 1,08,609 units sold during FY2025 indicates that demand will likely continue into the holiday season.
Monthly sales showed consistent improvement, increasing from 13,377 units in April to a high of 18,369 units in August, before experiencing a 14% decline in September, with sales of 15,771 units. This decrease was attributed to the recent GST reductions on ICE and hybrid vehicles, which reduced the pricing differential with EVs. The strongest growth was recorded in August, with a 172 per cent jump over the previous year.
The EV segment is expected to have a robust year with new models maintaining underlying demand, with a total volume of around 1,75,000 units by March 2026.
Tata Motors experiences 23% YOY Increase
In the same time period, as per Autocar, Tata Motors continues to lead with 34,586 units, up 23% year-over-year from 28,216 units in H1 FY2025. Monthly volumes have stabilised since the Harrier EV's July launch, and the portfolio currently includes the Punch, Nexon, Currv, Harrier, Tiago, and Tigor in EV configuration. Despite this, market share has decreased to about 40% from nearly 64% a year before. The greater pressure is coming from JSW MG Motor India and Mahindra, whose combined market share increased from roughly 26% in H1 FY2025 to over 50% now.
MG Motor India experiences 220% YoY Increase
In H1 FY2026, as per Autocar, JSW MG Motor India supplied 26,640 EVs, noting a 220 per cent year-on-year increase from 8,329 units in H1 FY2025. The Windsor and the brand's battery-as-a-service option contributed to this growth. As a result, the brand's market share increased from about 19 per cent the previous year to about 29 per cent. Meanwhile, to keep higher-end demand apart from the core lineup, the fleet now includes the Comet and ZS EV as well as the M9 MPV and Cyberster roadster, which are sold through the MG Select network.
Mahindra experiences 531% YoY increase
The BE 6 and XEV 9e joined the XUV400 earlier this year, increasing Mahindra's EV momentum and improving its retail performance through H1 FY2026. The BE 6 and XEV 9e accounted for the majority of deliveries, which totalled 19,436 e-SUVs between April and September 2025. This is a 531 per cent rise and a 16,358 unit increment over the 3,078 units delivered the year before. Due to this increase, Mahindra's EV share has increased from about 7% in H1 FY2025 to roughly 21%, Autocar reported.
