India’s Electric Car Market in June 2025: Tata Motors Leads, But MG & Mahindra Drive Major Disruption

India’s electric four-wheeler (E4W) market saw strong growth in June 2025, with 13,004 EVs sold—a 59.4% YoY jump. But the biggest story isn’t the overall growth—it’s the dramatic shift in market leadership.

Tata Motors, long the undisputed leader in India’s EV space, is losing ground to fast-rising challengers MG Motor India and Mahindra, who together now account for over 53% of the EV market.

Telangana Electric Car Sales – June 2025 (Retail Data)

Tata Motors topped EV sales in Telangana for June 2025 with 883 units. MG followed with 716 units, and Mahindra clocked 597 units.

Top 10 Electric Car Brands in Telangana – June 2025

Rank Brand Units Sold
1 Tata Motors 883
2 MG Motor India 716
3 Mahindra & Mahindra 597
4 BYD India 153
5 Hyundai Motor India 101
6 Citroën 42
7 BMW India 35
8 Mercedes-Benz India 31
9 Kia India 18
10 Volvo Auto India 6

This Telangana data highlights Mahindra’s rising influence at the state level too, narrowing the gap with Tata and outperforming premium brands like Hyundai and BYD in key metros like Hyderabad.

Tata’s performance in Telangana reinforces its pan-India dominance, though the narrowing margins with MG and Mahindra signal competitive pressure in key states.

Tata Motors: Still Leading, But Not Unchallenged

  • Sales: 4,664 units
  • Top Models: Nexon EV, Tiago EV
  • Market Share: Down to 35.8% (from 62.7% in June 2024)

Despite holding the top spot, Tata’s dominance is under threat. New launches like the Curvv EV and Punch EV have yet to significantly impact volumes, and Harrier EV bookings are still fresh.

MG Motor India: India’s Biggest EV Disruptor

  • Sales: 3,945 units
  • Growth: +167% YoY
  • New Hero: MG Windsor EV, a mid-size crossover driving urban appeal
  • Market Share: 30.3%

The Windsor, alongside ZS EV and Comet, is helping MG close the gap with Tata to under 6%, reshaping the competitive landscape.

Mahindra: Born-Electric Strategy Pays Off

  • Sales: 2,979 units
  • Growth: +512% YoY
  • Top Models: XUV400, BE 6, XEV 9e
  • Market Share: 22.9%

Mahindra’s BE-series and tech-first approach are resonating. It’s the third-largest EV OEM and gaining faster than any other player in India.

Hyundai, BYD, and Citroën: Mixed Bag of Results

  • Hyundai: 509 units (down 20% MoM, up 708% YoY), driven by Creta EV, Ioniq 5, and Kona
  • BYD: 461 units (11% MoM decline, but up 90% YoY), with Atto 3 and Seal as key products
  • Citroën: 80 units, deep YoY & MoM decline—eC3 continues to underperform

Outlook: H2 2025 Could Redefine Market Rankings

As the Indian EV market matures, new players like Mahindra and MG are proving that Tata’s first-mover advantage isn’t unshakable. With Harrier EV deliveries, new MG crossovers, and Mahindra’s BE expansion, H2 2025 will be decisive.

Stay tuned as EVINDIA continues to track the market shift every month.
