India to export EV to over 100 countries: PM Modi announces big EV expansion ambition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India is preparing to export electric vehicles to as many as 100 countries, calling it a “new success story” for the industry. The announcement came at the ET World Leaders Forum 2025, where the Prime Minister linked the milestone to the country’s broader progress in manufacturing and research.

To mark a new success story, India is gearing up to start exporting electric vehicles to over 100 countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared while addressing the audience at the ET World Leaders Forum 2025. As per reports, a special program will be launched on August 6th to materialise this ambitious target.

The announcement, which for the first time specifies a clear-cut number of India’s export goals, coincides with the various Indian manufacturers’ vision to go global.

PM, highlighting India’s progress in manufacturing and research, underlined that in the past ten years, the country’s auto exports have more than doubled from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore. The nation has begun shipping metro coaches, rail coaches, and even locomotives in addition to automobiles and two-wheelers. The next step in this journey, as per Modi, is the EV export plan, which will establish India as a global supplier of clean mobility as well as a domestic hub.

Moreover, PM also noted that to fulfil its inspiration, India can not depend solely on “imported research”.  He said that although foreigners' “know-how may keep the wheels turning, it is home-grown innovation that will decide the country’s long-term standing,” HT reported. According to Modi, focus and urgency will shape India’s research ecosystem.

Additionally, the announcement was contextualised as per broader economic data. With 22 lakh new admissions to the EPFO database in June 2025, the most for any month, Modi praised the record numbers of job creation. He also pointed out that while foreign exchange reserves are at all-time highs, inflation is at its lowest level since 2017. He also mentioned the solar industry, where India's production capacity has increased from 2.5 GW in 2014 to 100 GW at present.

The government's emphasis on exports may present opportunities as well as challenges for the sector. Businesses that already operate internationally might benefit from policy support, while others will need to increase their investment in quality, design, and research to meet global standards.

India's EV export strategy is more about sending a message than it is about numbers. Strong fundamentals enable the nation to "redirect fast-flowing currents," as Modi stated. Keeping up with that flow and making sure India's electric story resonates in international markets will now be the task for manufacturers.
