India gets 27,000+ EV charging stations in 2025: Report

With the installation of 8,932 charging stations by the government and 18,500 more by Oil companies, throughout the country, India has noted a significant expansion in its EV charging infrastructure in 2025, as per the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas' year-end press release. Bringing the total to 27,432 charging stations across India, the charging stations were reported to be installed at petrol pumps and retail outlets. The surge in the installation came from the government’s FAME-II scheme.

By making charging more convenient, this expansion will encourage more people to adopt electric vehicles and bikes. Meanwhile, drivers may easily find a location to charge their cars because these stations are established where people already go to obtain fuel.

Citing the press release, Economic Times reported, "Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies are setting up 4,000 Energy Stations during 2024-25 to 2028-29 along major corridors and other feasible locations. As of 1 November 2025, 1,064 Energy Stations have been set up across the country," the release said. The news stations are being built as integrated mobility hubs that provide biofuels, CNG, LNG (where practical), and charging stations for electric cars in addition to traditional fuels like petrol and diesel.

Moreover, the government, under the "APNA GHAR" project, has also emphasised the use of big trucks, creating over 500 rest areas for truckers. These regions increase traffic safety and contribute to job growth in the nation's rural communities. These initiatives are a part of a national strategy to improve the efficiency and cleanliness of transportation in the future.

Furthermore, Biofuels also experienced a major increase during 2025. The release added, "Ethanol blending in petrol reached an average of 19.24 per cent in ESY 2024-25, with cumulative foreign exchange savings exceeding ₹1.55 lakh crore and substantial carbon emission reductions," ET reported.

The Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana supported advanced biofuels, with operating second-generation ethanol plants at Panipat and Numaligarh serving as significant turning points.
