iGo Teams Up with Sun Electro Devices to Turbocharge EV Production – 1,000 Smart 2.5-Wheelers a Month!

In a bold move that could shake up India’s electric mobility landscape, EV startup iGo has partnered with Pune-based Sun Electro Devices to rapidly scale manufacturing of its unique “2.5-wheeler” EVs. Unlike most EV players who are busy building costly in-house plants, iGo is betting on outsourced production to hit the market faster.

Under this collaboration, production is expected to ramp up to 1,000 units per month within just seven months, with the first launches planned in Pune, Panjim, and Mumbai.

Breaking the Vertical Integration Mold

The Indian EV sector has been dominated by companies chasing vertical integration — setting up their own factories to qualify for government incentives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. But iGo’s CEO, Sravan Kumar Appana, says speed to market is key:

“In hardware, building new technology is super hard. Making a lovable product is not easy. Getting it certified is a mammoth task. And finally, bringing it to manufacturing is an altogether different challenge. Many startups, even with a great product, struggle at this last mile. This partnership solves that problem for us.”

Inside the Manufacturing Muscle

Sun Electro Devices, operating from a 30,000 sq. ft. facility in Chakan, Pune, brings proven expertise in automotive OEM manufacturing and a strong supplier network. This gives iGo instant access to quality production without the overhead of building a new plant.

The ‘2.5-Wheeler’ Edge

iGo’s electric 2.5-wheelers bridge the gap between scooters and electric rickshaws. They feature:

  • Anti-topple stabilisation technology

  • Self-balancing capabilities

  • Triple-disc combined braking system

These features target India’s congested urban streets while ensuring stability for riders — especially those new to EVs.

Why This Matters for India’s EV Race

With EV demand surging ahead of supply and raw material shortages affecting several brands, iGo’s manufacturing shortcut could help it ride the wave during the upcoming festive season. If the rollout succeeds, this agile production strategy might become a blueprint for other EV startups.
