Hyundai launches Ioniq 5 N: All you need to know

The Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai's first high-performance

EV

, has been introduced. With the N Grin Boost mode, the two electric motors may provide a combined output of up to 650 horsepower. The Ioniq 5 N also receives some external and interior aesthetic modifications along with performance improvements.

Performance

As previously indicated, the Ioniq 5 N is propelled by two electric motors with a combined output of 609hp and a maximum speed of 21,000rpm. But when used in Hyundai's boost mode, N Grin Boost, they create 650 horsepower, enabling the Ioniq 5 N to reach a claimed 0-100kph time of 3.4 seconds and a peak speed of 260kph. In the N Grin Boost mode, full available power is available for 10 seconds to maximum acceleration. Hyundai has not released the Ioniq 5 N's torque rating.

An 84kWh battery supplies all of this power, although Hyundai has not yet disclosed the battery's range. Using a 350kW DC fast charger, Hyundai says that the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes. A four-piston, 400mm front disc and a one-piston, 360mm rear disc are used for braking; according to the automaker, these brakes are made of novel lightweight material and have optimised airflow for increased cooling. The Ioniq 5 N provides up to 0.6G of decelerative force with N Brake Regen, and it stays engaged during braking for up to 0.2G.

Hyundai added 2.1 metres of extra adhesives and 42 more welding spots to the chassis to strengthen it. Additionally strengthened for increased stiffness in corners are the battery and motor mounts. Integrated drive axles at the front and back of the Ioniq 5 N are also influenced by the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Features

N e-shift and N Active Sound Plus are two innovations that Hyundai believes would improve the driving experience. The former is reported to be a replica of the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox seen in N's ICE vehicles. The latter replicates the exhaust note of both ICEs and EVs when combined with the N-shift.

The N Active Sound + uses a 10-speaker system with three themes: Ignition, Evolution, and Supersonic. There are eight speakers inside and two speakers outdoors. The Supersonic tune is based on a twin-engine fighter aircraft, while the Evolution and Ignition themes mimic the sounds of EVs and turbo-petrol engines, respectively. According to Hyundai, the N Active Sound + gives the driver a reference point for understanding how the power is being used.

The N pedal, which was created to solve an EV's weight difficulties, is also included with the Ioniq 5. According to rumours, the N pedal prioritises quick cornering speeds above energy economy. This is accomplished by using decelerative force and transferring weight to enable a sharper corner entrance.

The N Drift Optimiser and N Torque Distribution are two more driving aids in the Ioniq 5. The former uses an electronic limited-slip differential to regulate torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, while the latter replicates the clutch kick motion of an ICE-powered rear-wheel drive automobile to start a drift. The N version of the Ioniq 5 also has a vehicle-to-load feature that enables the EV's battery to charge other devices, much like the conventional Ioniq 5.

Dimensions

Hyundai has added a few performance-enhancing body elements to the Ioniq 5 N. It is 80mm longer than the standard model, and 50mm wider, and gets 21-inch aluminium alloy wheels. The new model is also 20mm lower than the original.

Its redesigned front bumper gets air curtains and air flaps to help channel air better and improve cooling. On the bumper’s lower part, there's an orange accent that runs across the side, and to the lower part of the redesigned rear bumper. Besides a larger air diffuser, the rear also gets an N-specific spoiler, which houses the third brake light.

Interior

The Ioniq 5 N differs significantly from the Ioniq 5 in several ways on the inside. It comes with a steering wheel designed specifically for N, two N buttons that may be configured to select the drive modes, and a second button designated just for driving modes. The previously mentioned N Grin Boost has its own button on the steering wheel. The central console has also been overhauled by Hyundai to be more track-friendly with knee padding, shin supports, and a new centre armrest. To provide support for cornering, Hyundai strengthened the bolsters on the bucket seats, which are set 20mm lower than those on the regular Ioniq 5 N.

Price in India

The Ioniq 5 is presently available in India for Rs 44.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India), and it comes with a 72.6kWh battery pack with a 631km-long ARAI-certified range. 217 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque are produced by its rear-mounted electric motor.
