Hyundai Transforms Tamil Nadu into its Flagship EV Hub with a Massive ₹26,000 Crore Investment
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has officially cemented its long-term vision for electric mobility in India, designating Tamil Nadu as its primary manufacturing and development hub for Electric Vehicles (EVs). Backed by a strategic capital infusion, the automaker is laying the groundwork for heavy localization, new model rollouts, and comprehensive infrastructure expansion.
The ₹26,000 Crore Roadmap (2023–2032)
At the core of Hyundai’s announcement is a massive ₹26,000 Crore financial commitment allocated specifically for Tamil Nadu over the current decade. This state-level focus represents the majority share of HMIL's broader ₹45,000 Crore pan-India mobility strategy. The capital will be deployed across advanced manufacturing capabilities, supply chain development, and charging infrastructure.
First Mass-Market Dedicated EV and 90% Localization
The Chennai manufacturing facility is slated to launch two new models this year, highlighted by the rollout of Hyundai’s first dedicated mass-market EV.
To ensure competitive pricing and supply chain resilience, HMIL is aggressively pushing component localization. The automaker plans to increase its localization rate from the current 82% to 90% over the next five to six years. Key pillars of this strategy include:
-
Establishing a dedicated local battery sub-assembly plant.
-
Localizing critical EV power electronics.
₹4,000 Crore Boost for Local Supply Chains
Beyond its own facilities, Hyundai is significantly scaling its vendor ecosystem within the state. HMIL will increase its procurement from local Tamil Nadu-based suppliers by ₹4,000 Crore. This upstream investment is projected to generate approximately 2,000 new jobs in the region, strengthening the state's position as a premier automotive manufacturing corridor.
Expanding the High-Capacity Charging Network
To address range anxiety and support the upcoming mass-market EV launch, Hyundai is aggressively expanding its public infrastructure footprint. The company currently operates 39 DC fast-charging stations (featuring 78 distinct charging points) across Tamil Nadu. Over the next two to three years, HMIL will rapidly deploy additional high-capacity charging hubs across major cities and crucial highway networks.
Building a Future-Ready Workforce
Recognizing the technical demands of the transitioning automotive sector, Hyundai has partnered with the Tamil Nadu government for a massive skill-development initiative. Scheduled to launch in December 2027, the program will train local youth across Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and engineering colleges. The curriculum will focus on next-generation mobility technologies, including EV manufacturing protocols, hydrogen mobility, artificial intelligence, and advanced robotics.
