Gujarat Sets Benchmark with India’s First Cybersecurity-Audited Electric Bus Fleet in Ahmedabad
In a pioneering move for India’s smart mobility sector, the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Corporation (AMTC) has officially inaugurated a new fleet of cybersecurity audited electric buses. Launched by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, this initiative marks the first time a connected electric bus fleet in India has undergone a structured security validation prior to public deployment.
Prioritizing Digital Safety in Public Transit
As public transportation becomes increasingly reliant on connected technologies, the risk of digital vulnerabilities has moved to the forefront. To address this, the AMTC commissioned a comprehensive cybersecurity audit conducted by GlobalLogic, a Hitachi Group company, and its strategic partner IRCLASS Systems and Solutions (ISSPL).
The audit involved rigorous "gray-box" penetration testing to identify and mitigate potential systemic risks. The assessment adhered to international cybersecurity engineering standards (ISO/SAE 21434), Indian regulatory requirements (AIS-189), and global threat scenarios outlined in UN R155 Annex 5.
Smart Features and Advanced Integration
The new fleet consists of Midi AC Electric buses designed for compatibility with Ahmedabad’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors. These vehicles are equipped with a sophisticated Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS), which integrates several critical modules:
-
Real-Time Tracking: GPS based Automatic Vehicle Location Systems (AVLS).
-
Passenger Safety: High definition CCTV surveillance, Mobile Network Video Recorders (mNVR), and emergency panic buttons.
-
Information Systems: Digital Passenger Information Systems (PIS) and LED displays for real time route updates.
-
Operational Efficiency: Automated run kilometre calculations to streamline operator payments and fleet management.
A New Standard for the EV Industry
Industry experts suggest that Ahmedabad’s approach sets a vital benchmark for the Indian EV industry. By treating cybersecurity as a core safety component similar to mechanical braking or battery management the Gujarat government is ensuring that the transition to green mobility does not compromise passenger data or service continuity.
"This engagement demonstrates how structured cybersecurity validation can uncover risks before full fleet deployment," noted representatives from ISSPL. As India accelerates its electrification goals, the integration of digital resilience is expected to become a mandatory requirement for transit authorities nationwide.
