GOV plans to establish 5,833 new EV charging facilities on national highways

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways announced on Wednesday that the nation now has 5,293 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout its national highways and has set a target for installing 5,833 more along the highways out of a total of 7,432. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari stated in a written response in the Rajya Sabha that three oil marketing firms have received a capital subsidy of Rs 800 crore towards the construction of 7,432 EV charging stations.

At a cost of Rs 178 crore, 4,729 of the 5,293 EV charging stations that are now in use were installed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

According to a report by the Economic Times,  the government does not currently have any plans to build any power stations for EV charging stations next to national highways.

"Moreover, with the help of three oil marketing companies under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has established a target of 5,833 EV charging stations along highways, out of a total of 7,432 EV charging stations," Minister Gadkari stated.

Maharashtra having 750 charging stations holds the title of a state having the highest number of EV charging stations than any other. The states with the next highest number are Uttar Pradesh (577), Rajasthan (482), Tamil Nadu (369), Karnataka (300), and Haryana (284).

On the other hand, the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024, which seeks to accelerate the growth of the nation's electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing ecosystem and promote green transportation is going to be concluded on July 31st.

The program cost Rs 500 crore and ran for four months, from April 1 to July 31. For 3,72,215 automobiles, the maximum compensation under the demand incentive is Rs 493.55 crore.

First-come, first-served claims filed under the program will get incentives.

In FY25, the two-wheeler sector is projected to maintain a consistent volume growth rate of between 7% to 9%.

According to CareEdge Ratings, increased sales of electric vehicles (EVs) encouraged by the government's EMPS 2024 are anticipated to propel growth in FY25.
