Delhi now a EV capital of India: CM Kejriwal
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, said on June 27 that Delhi has emerged as the nation's
electric vehicle
(EV) capital due to the city seeing the greatest EV sales.Mr. Kejriwal said that pollution levels in the city had decreased since 2014 while speaking during the opening of 42 charging stations. He said, "We began pushing EVs to reduce pollution and with the understanding that they are the way of the future. In 2020, we created an EV policy and established a goal of having one-fourth of Delhi's new EV sales be electric by 2025.”
In order to make Delhi the nation's EV capital and fasten the adoption of EVs across all vehicle sectors, particularly in the mass category of
two-wheelers
, public and shared vehicles, and cargo carriers, the Delhi EV Policy was introduced in August 2020. He said, “I'm pleased to report that 13% of all automobiles purchased in Delhi are electric vehicles. 1.28 lakh electric vehicles have been purchased in Delhi since August 2020.”According to the Delhi Chief Minister, the Niti Aayog has praised Delhi's EV policy. Additionally, Mr. Kejriwal said that Delhi's charging stations had the most competitive power prices. He said, "Delhi residents support us. The movement has developed into a populist one. We offer the most charging stations around the country. One-third of the country's charging stations are located in Delhi.
In December 2022, Delhi registered 7,046 new EV users pushing the year-on-year growth to 86 percent. Playing a significant role in the update, the state EV policy increased to 93,239 e-vehicle. In this, two-wheeler acquires almost 55 percent of the total sales.
