Delhi Extends EV Policy Until 2026 – Major Boost for Electric 2-Wheelers & Charging Stations Ahead!

In a bold move to accelerate clean mobility, the Delhi Government has officially extended its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy until March 31, 2026, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced on Tuesday. The decision aims to provide room for extensive public consultation before finalizing the much-awaited draft of the new EV policy framework.

What’s New in the Delhi EV Policy Extension?

Here are the key highlights and future implications:

  • Petrol, Diesel, and CNG Two-Wheelers to Be Banned from registration after August 15, 2026
  • CNG auto-rickshaws to be phased out by August 2025
  • Subsidies retained for EVs under ₹25 lakh
  • More EV charging stations and battery disposal frameworks to be deployed
  • Data-led review of EV adoption, infrastructure, and subsidy usage underway

Minister Singh stated that the Cabinet has approved this interim extension to allow “comprehensive consultation with citizens, industry bodies, EV OEMs, and environmental organizations,” ensuring the new framework is both inclusive and forward-thinking.

Why This Matters for India’s EV Revolution

Originally launched in 2020, Delhi’s EV Policy aimed to reach 25% EV adoption in new vehicle registrations by 2024—a target that has catalysed a surge in electric 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and last-mile delivery EVs.

The extension until March 2026 ensures continued momentum across:

  • EV sales and subsidies in Delhi NCR
  • Expansion of EV charging infrastructure
  • Growth of electric scooters and bikes
  • Safe battery and e-waste disposal practices

What Comes Next?

The Transport Department will use the extension period to assess subsidy disbursement data, EV penetration rates, and infrastructure readiness. This is expected to inform policy updates that support even higher EV adoption, particularly in the two-wheeler and commercial fleet segments.
