BYD to start mass installation of all-solid-state batteries: CTO
BYD, a Chinese EV manufacturer, on Saturday announced to initiate the mass production and installation of 60Ah all-solid-state batteries in its EV fleet by 2027. Previously piloted in the 2024 production line of the company, the battery will be deployed on a large scale by 20230, according to a report by Cars News China.
The announcement came during the second China All-Solid-State Battery Innovation and Development Summit Forum, held on Feb.15.
In the long run, following a large-scale development, solid-state ternary batteries will cost almost same as the liquid-state ternary batteries, according to Sun Huajun – CTO of the Shenzhen BYD Lithium Battery Co., Ltd.
Last year, in September, Sun said "sulphide solid-state batteries being one of the directions," he will continue “to strengthen the research and development (R&D) of the next generation of batteries, such as solid-state batteries and new materials,” Cars News China reported. Sun anticipates that the sulphide solid-state battery demonstration period, primarily for mid-to-high-end electric vehicles, will take place between 2027 and 2029. Sulphide solid-state batteries are expected to make their way into the mainstream electric vehicle market between 2030 and 2032.
Similar predictions were made by Lian Yubo, the head scientist at BYD, chief automotive engineer, and dean of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, who stated that "three years will be difficult, and five years will be more realistic."
Lian added that lithium iron phosphate batteries will not be phased out in the next 15 to 20 years because of issues like cost and material controllability. "Lithium iron phosphate batteries will complement solid-state batteries in high-end models and be utilised in vehicles of various levels."
