Bureau of Indian standard introduces new safety standards for EVs in India
With the goal of improving the quality and safety of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released two new standards.
The two new standards are for electric vehicles in the L, M, and N categories, and they are named IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024. It is crucial to note that the M and N categories correlate to four-wheelers and cargo trucks, respectively, while the L category is related to two-wheelers.
Powertrains and batteries must meet strict performance and safety criteria under the new rules, according to an official statement from the government.
"To improve the safety of EVs in the L, M, and N categories, the BIS has released two new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024. These regulations concentrate on making sure the powertrain, which is an essential part of electric cars, satisfies strict safety criteria. They also stress battery performance and safety, making sure they are safe and strong," BIS continued.
As a result, India can now claim 30 local standards pertaining to charging systems and other accessories for electric automobiles.
For the uninitiated, the IS 18590: 2024 demands strict safety procedures for electric vehicle (EV) powertrains, which include parts like the motor, battery pack, and gearbox system. BIS will be able to reduce the risks associated with EV operation and maintenance as a result.
