Bajaj decides to rename Chetak to “Blue Line” series

The Blue Line 2901, the most affordable version of Bajaj Auto's Chetak electric scooter, was released in the first part of June. Although the scooter's Rs 95,998 price tag attracted a lot of attention, it was not apparent what the new suffix meant. Bajaj has now stated that additional Chetak variations, including the top-spec Chetak Premium, which will shortly be called the Chetak Blue Line 3201, would also adopt this new naming nomenclature in the upcoming months.

Bajaj has addressed the meaning of the names, stating that "Blue Line" refers to the fact that all of these scooters are constructed on the initial electric Chetak platform, which made its debut in 2019. This platform's derivatives in the future will all have the Blue Line suffix as well. Regarding 2901, the battery capacity is indicated by the first two digits, and the trim level is determined by the final two digits. Therefore, the trim level is 01 and the battery pack capacity of the Chetak Blue Line 2901 is 2.9 kWh. Considering that the Chetak Premium, with its 3.2 kWh battery, would likely be called the Blue Line 3201, it is possible that the mid-spec Chetak Urbane will be called the Blue Line 2902.

Currently, the Blue Line 2901 (Rs 95,998) is the entry-level model in the Chetak line. The mid-spec Chetak Urbane is priced at Rs 1.23 lakh, while the Chetak Premium is priced at Rs 1.47 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, including EMPS subsidy). The Bajaj Blue Line 2901 is over Rs 20,000 less expensive than the Urbane since it lacks a few components, such as the front storage box, which is replaced with open storage bins. The 2901 has a weaker motor, a slower peak speed of 63 kmph, and lacks the remote key fob that comes with the Chetak Premium. Instead, it uses a standard key and key slot.

Currently, more than 500 dealerships around India sell the Chetak. The Blue Line 2901 costs just Rs 6,000 more than the Ola S1X Plus 3 kWh and is positioned level with the TVS iQube 2.2 kWh. With the recent expansion of its product lineup, TVS Motor Company, which is aiming to cross the sales of 25,000 electric scooters on a monthly basis, is clearly hoping to keep up with Bajaj, which has overtaken Ather Energy to become India's third-largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer in terms of monthly sales.
