India E 4 Wheeler Sales April 2026: Maruti & VinFast Disrupt Leaderboard as Tata’s Punch.ev Maintains Stronghold

The Indian electric four wheeler (e4W) market has entered a new era this April. Despite the expiration of the PM E-DRIVE subsidy on March 31, the industry recorded a resilient 18,041 units in total registrations, proving that organic demand is now the primary engine of growth.

While Tata Motors remains the volume leader, the April data reveals a significant shift in momentum. The entry of Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara and the rapid adoption of VinFast’s VF MPV 7 have redefined the leaderboard.

Brand Analysis: What’s Driving the Numbers?

Tata Motors: The Power of the Punch.ev

Tata Motors continues its undisputed reign with 8,510 units. Industry analysts attribute a significant portion of this success to the Tata Punch.ev. By offering a "right-sized" electric SUV with high end tech features at a competitive price point, Tata has effectively captured the urban commuter market. Furthermore, Tata’s early investment in charging infrastructure provides a "security net" for buyers that newer entrants are still building.

Maruti Suzuki: The e-Vitara & The "Peace of Mind" Factor

Recording 1,223 units, Maruti Suzuki has officially entered the EV era with a bang. The e-Vitara, built on the HEARTECT-e platform, has seen immediate traction due to Maruti's unmatched Pan India showroom and service facility. For many buyers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, the ability to service an EV at a local Maruti workshop is the ultimate "deal-closer," overcoming the range anxiety associated with newer, less established brands.

VinFast: The MPV Disruptor

The Vietnamese automaker has pulled off a major surprise, securing the fourth spot with 1,231 units. The hero of this story is the VF MPV 7. By launching a dedicated 7 seater electric MPV, VinFast has tapped into the multi generational Indian family segment a niche previously ignored by most EV manufacturers. With its 517 km (ARAI) range and spacious third row, the VF MPV 7 is quickly becoming the preferred choice for family travel and premium fleet operators.

Mahindra & MG: Holding the Mid-Ground

Mahindra remains a strong #2, fueled by its "SUV-first" strategy and the rollout of the BE series. Meanwhile, JSW MG Motor maintains a consistent presence with nearly 5,000 units, relying on the high tech appeal of the ZS EV and the urban agility of the Comet EV to stay competitive in a crowded market.

The EVINDIA Take: A Market in Transition

The April 2026 data confirms that the Indian EV buyer is becoming more sophisticated. While the PM E-DRIVE focus has shifted toward two wheelers and commercial segments, the four wheeler market is proving it can stand on its own feet through compelling products.

As Maruti scales production and VinFast expands its dealership network to 75 outlets, the coming months will determine if Tata's massive lead can be challenged by the combination of "Family Utility" (VinFast) and "Service Reliability" (Maruti).
