Amazon, Uber to invest in Global Optimism's "The Climate Pledge"
Global Optimism's co-founded "The Climate Pledge" will receive $2.65 million in investments from companies including Amazon, Mahindra Logistics, Uber, HCLTech, and Magenta Mobility for its new shared EV charging station project "JOULE (Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification)" in Bengaluru.
By 2030 it is projected that the initiative would save over 11.2 million litres of petrol while avoiding about 25,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. At the same time, it is expected that the project will supply charging stations with equal amounts of 22,700 megawatt hours of electricity and 6.2 megawatts of renewable energy capacity. Besides, this update is estimated to create about 185 permanent jobs during the same period.
The initiative is expected to have enough capacity to cater for approximately 9,500 EVs. Based on increased demand the project is anticipated to support more than 5,500 EVs in Bengaluru by 2030. Presently Doddakallasandra has become Bengaluru’s first EV charging station which fulfils all daily EV-charging requirements, promoting the construction of five more charging stations by the end of this year.
Sally Fouts, Global Leader of The Climate Pledge, stated that the action will help India's transition to electric cars, particularly Bengaluru's objective of having 100% EVs for three-wheelers, cab services, and corporate fleets by 2030.
"We are happy to be a part of The Climate Pledge's endeavour to create more charging stations. JOULE helps us reach our objective of deploying 10,000 EVs in India by 2025. With over 7,300 EVs in our India operations thus far, we're on schedule to meet this goal and remain dedicated to working with manufacturers, delivery service providers, and others to accelerate EV adoption," said Abhinav Singh, VP of Operations at Amazon India.
The Karnataka government has also backed this initiative, observing the potential of public-private partnerships to propel India towards a more sustainable future.
Kazam, an India-based EV charging platform, will play a significant role in expanding the charging station network. Greenko, a renewable energy supplier, and Deloitte, a strategic consulting partner, will also help the initiative.
