The All-Electric 2027 BMW iX5: Setting a New Benchmark for Luxury EV SUVs

The automotive landscape shifts today as BMW officially unveils the 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive, the first ever fully electric iteration of its iconic luxury SUV. As part of the fifth generation X5 lineup, the iX5 stands out by combining immense power, record breaking battery capacity, and next generation charging technology.

Unmatched Battery Technology and Range

The standout feature of the new iX5 is its massive high voltage battery. Featuring 144 kWh of usable capacity in the U.S. (141 kWh in Europe), the iX5 is equipped with one of the largest battery packs ever installed in a mainstream electric SUV.

  • Exceptional Range: The iX5 is expected to deliver a competitive electric range of up to 435 miles (EPA estimate) or between 645 and 845 km on the WLTP cycle.

  • 800-Volt Architecture: Built on an 800-volt system, the vehicle supports ultra fast DC charging at up to 460 kW.

  • Rapid Charging: Drivers can expect to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in just 22 to 23 minutes under ideal conditions.

Performance Dynamics

Despite its substantial size, the iX5 is engineered to deliver the hallmark driving dynamics expected of the BMW brand.

The dual motor, all wheel drive iX5 60 xDrive powertrain produces:

  • System Power: 578 hp (425 kW).

  • Torque: 805 Nm (593 lb-ft).

  • Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a blistering 4.6 seconds.

BMW has also prioritized versatility, equipping the iX5 with a 2,700 kg (approx. 5,952 lbs) towing capacity, making it a highly capable companion for those needing to haul trailers or boats.

Sustainability and Innovation

The 2027 iX5 is more than just a powerful SUV; it is a showcase for BMW’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing. The vehicle incorporates a significant amount of secondary raw materials, with BMW reporting that approximately one third of the vehicle’s weight is comprised of recycled or reused components.

Furthermore, production takes place at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, which has been upgraded to support the manufacturing of these high voltage systems, marking a significant milestone for the U.S. facility as it produces its first all electric model.

Availability

The 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive is set to launch in the first quarter of 2027. With its blend of "Neue Klasse" design influences, cutting-edge digital user experience, and zero-emissions performance, the iX5 is positioned to be a major disruptor in the luxury electric SUV segment.
